hi Malcolm!

very good trip report...i have not done the gaspé part for a while, so i decided to print it with your permission, but did a small part of the same trip last week ( the acadian part) , from dieppe to cambellton to quebec city, in a vw dealer car exchange. i drove a jetta tdi from quebec city and brought back a golf tdi. i saw quite a few vanagons and loaf(s) on this 18 hour trip. I always try to memorize the license plates, to know if some are on this list, but after a few, i loose track of all the numbers...

so, the reason of this letter is to tell you about the club international camping car...in 1993, a few westfalias were camping in the Magdelen's islands and someone decided to form a club, so next year will be their tenth anniversay. the meeting will be on the islands, and most of the members hope to ''smash" the guinness record of 489 westies , they had two years ago.

my first time on the islands was in 1973 for a two week scuba instructor course...i never and ever did eat lobsters like those two weeks, almost every dinner...it is supposed to be the best ??? we used to dive every alternoon off the islands from fishermen boats, so we got to know them well and could buy lobsters almost for nothing...those were the good old days, when there were no visitors...these people are very polite and still call tourists "visitors".

i had then converted a brand new 1970 window van into a west, without the top and camped in campings and beaches with nobody around...but things have change and better make reservations? my second trip was in 1998. we had brought a few kayaks and bicycles and it was still a very nice trip, but with more people around...i did a little skin diving around the open caves and did kayak surfing...hope you enjoy yourselves as we did ...enclosed the camping car add http://www.westfalia.qc.ca and mine...sorry i do not have pictures of the islands.

if this is your first trip, do have a nice one...if you do not want to camp on the pier of souris, prince edward island, for a few days, waiting for the ferryboat, make reservations.
