Subject: Clutch Problem

Got Zippy back with engine repair done under AVP warranty. Thanks Erin and Leonard.

New wierdness yesterday. The van has about 300 miles since Engine R&R and I was driving on the highway. Tried to shift and clutch seemed to do nothing. Was able to get it most of the way home by engine speed matching during shifting, but finally had to pull over. Examined the master, slave and lines and found no leaking anywhere. I tried pumpimg the pedal a bunch of times to see if anything leaked.

Decided to try it one more time before calling for a tow (standard practice, amazing how often it works) and, lo and behold, clutch works again. The reservoir is 2/3 down to the min mark, I have no idea when it was filled last. THe friction point seems a little close to the floor.

So now I wonder what's going on. Was it an air bubble in the system? Is it an internaly leaking master or slave that started working again with the pumping? Is it sticky throwout bearing? All clutch parts were replaced one year (6000 miles) ago with initial engine swap.

Any opinions on how to proceed? Replace master and slave and that rubber line going into the slave?

Any help appreciated.

BTW, my wife and I picked up a 2002 MV Weekender a month ago. GREAT car, but not as great a camper as the vanagon.

Thanks for the help. Peter
