The ducting on mine fell down about 2 months after I received the recall letter from VW. I thought it looked secure and hadn't bothered to take it in. After I did the 134a conversion and got the AC working, we found that it worked quite well without the duct. With the fan on 2 or 3, the air reaches the front quite well, bounces off the remaining AC assembly and visors and comes down onto the driver and front passenger. The stream of cold air entrains some warm air from the surrounding cabin and is thus tempered so that it is not unpleasantly cold. The biggest advantage to this duct "removal" is that I no longer bang my head on it when we are "sleeping" in the back. ;-)
