Mark,

Years ago I replaced the bushing on my old 72 westy. Like you I was puzzled as to how it can be removed. My mechanic lent me a tap (can't remember the size) which I screwed into the soft brass bushing and as the tap bottomed out (the bushing was fitted in a blind hole) the bushing was forced out. Worked like a charm.

I had my starter out of my '82 westy at the beginning of summer to replace the solenoid. The bushing was still snug fitting to the starter shaft and I left it alone but for a liberal smear of grease.
