I'm certainly not knocking the versatility of the Vanagon or even older
busses.
I've done a fair amount of hauling in my Westy but its my thinking that
for most people one Westy, Vanagon or Bus is enough.
I use my Westy primarily for Camping and when its the easiest to access I
run errands or just put it to general use.
Prior to having a Westy I used an Oldsmobile Station wagon and still use
it for hauling 48" wide materials that won't go in my Westy but I also
used it for pulling an Airstream Trailer, a Ski Boat and various
trailers.
I've used tow dollies behind it to move near dead Westies that I've
bought to restore.
After I've restored the Westy it goes on the block and is sold, I've
never had a desire to keep more than one even if I felt it was a better
vehicle than my present westy.
