Subject: Flush & Fill & Fan Switch questions

Volks,

I plan to replace the previous owner's coolant in my Westy this weekend along with the tempII and fan switch. It's been awhile since I've done this without going into it without some kind of pre-existing problem affecting what might be a "somewhat" normal routine procedure. My question is this: baring any conversation about installing inline hose fittings or trying to access the drains in the bottom of the heads, what do you think is the simplest, most effective, way to repeatedly drain the system?

Second question: At what position on the temp guage do you think the low-speed fan switch should normally switch on? My van's temperature runs very steady in the middle until sitting in trafic when it starts to rise. The fan doesn't kick in until the needle is nearly a 1/4" past the middle. Then it goes off after it has backed up a bit. It seems to be operating normally except that it is coming on at too high a temperature in my opinion. Is this a common failure in these switches? I've not seen it before and am already planning to replace it but I'd like to know what you're seeing on yours.

Thanks in advance.
