The auxilliary air regulator on my 1985 Vanagon GL appears to have bit the dust. I cannot detect any idle speed changes when squeezing the hoses per Bentley test. This is the old style regulator that mounts on top of the engine beneath the air cleaner. I took the unit off and when "cold" it passes air easily. However, when I connect it to 12 volts and let it heat up it never completely closes. At best, I would estimate the flow is never less than one half the "cold" state flow. Is this normal? Anybody have any experience with this unit? I couldn't find much in the archives except about the newer style cylidical unit that buzzes. If it remains patially open and bleeding additional air into the manifold, does this have any noticeable effect on driveability when the engine is hot? I expect it is going to be expensive to replace or just unobtainable. John |
