I think we get used to driving our busses/Vanagons and maybe don't realize how different it is to drive other more common vehicles such as SUVs. Also, I think until recently most SUVs are classified as trucks and are on truck chassis/suspension.

Haven't driven an SUV lately, have you? My parents Explorer has an incredibly harsh ride. Much harsher than any VW I've been in. It rides like a 3/4 ton pickup with nothing in it. I agree with your other points, though.
