Hi Shawn,

Presently I have 3 WBXs vanagons; an '86 Syncro van, a '91 Westy MV automatic and my newest baby, a '90 doublecab automatic. But I still remember the splitty I had. During the decade of the 70s I drove a 1955 type II all over California. It was not a standard 21 window microbus but it had factory corner glass windows with the small rear lid window glass. It also featured a unique, factory stock single brake light just above the license plate area.

Being much younger than I am now, I then converted the '55 to 12V, installed a "T" crankcase type III dual-port carburetor engine connected to a 1967 tunnel type I gear box with the ring gear flipped 180*. We overhauled and reinstalled the early rear wheel gear reduction boxes giving the '55 extraordinary climbing ability coupled with the torque of the type III engine. For nearly 10 years this wonderful splitty took us camping and inner-tubing with countless friends and dogs throughout the mountains of California. We had some tense moments but the type III powered '55 splitty always brought us home. While I appreciate the A/C, auto trans and power everything of the Vanagon, I still miss the sound and simplicity of the '55 splitty!!!!!!

Kind regards, John
