I concur about Big Sur. We camped at Lime Kiln Creek SP last spring and it was very nice -- not too many sites, split between the beach and a redwood grove a bit inland. The ranger was vigilant about keeping non-camper traffic out of the camping areas, as well as about enforcing the rules (e.g., dogs on leashes) in general. There is also a hiking trail through the redwoods to a waterfall and the remains of the lime kilns from which the park gets its name. You'll probably want to reserve a spot through the CA State Parks website.
