Might this be the component that is malfunctioning? Yes, it's the only possibility. It's a "relay" with 43 stamped on it, plugged in to the fuse-relay panel. Normal behavior is different depending on whether it's cubical (late) or tall (early). Either one, with the coolant level sender leads shorted should have no effect on the gauge.
