O.K. here goes,
I am turning 30 years old this month, just a puppy compared to the other Vanagon owners who have replied :)
Too bad this does not help my CI much.
Old long block from 73 Bug - 4
73 Standard Bug - 4
87 Wolfsburg GL - 4
92 GTI - 4
95 Ford Explorer (SUV!) - 6
9? Toro GTS lawn mower - 1
9? Ryobi 2 stroke Weedwacker - 1
Total C.I. is 20
My wife is sick of the manual transmissions, so we are talking about a new Tiptonic Passat Wagon to replace the Explorer, so if we
get the 1.8T, that means I lose 2 cylinders, but gain another VW, and lose the SUV. If we had the money, I would love the W8, and that
way I gain 2 more cylinders!
Hopefully no one will hate me now for owning a SUV. FWIW, this Ford has only needed a new slave cylinder, and tires since we
bought it 5 years ago, it has 86k miles, and is probably going to start falling apart soon, but it has been a good vehicle for us, with
low maintenance and 4wd to boot.

All this talk about big SUV's had me thinking about how we measure a man's
worth here in Minnesota. Its called the Cylinder Index. How it works is you
count how many cylinders your vehicles, lawn equipment and toys have; and
that's your cylinder index. I for one have a C.I. of 20. 4 for the Vanagon,
4 for the bug, 4 for the extra engine, 6 for the evil S.U.V. (that I
wouldn't trade for anything), 1 for the weed whacker and 1 for the gas
powered remote control bug. You can count 4 wheelers, snowmobiles and boats
if you have them. Now the key is, if you're a real man it should equal at
least your age. If not, go buy more cylinders, especially big SUV's with 8
or 10 cylinder engines.
As for all you hypocrites that think that big vehicles are evil, why don't
you sell your Vanagon and buy one of those Honda hybrids. Oh wait, that's
why you're a hypocrite, you should be able to do what you want, and the rest
of us should suffer and drive little specks. Or wait why don't you go out on
a real limb and just walk everywhere and never use the evil combustion
engine.
Peace out,
Peder
