Yes, that was it exactly. I was having trouble getting the fill hose to connect properly with the existing R-12 connector on the low pressure side. I think that the AC supply company sent me the wrong hose assembly (got yellow, think I maybe should have gotten blue) so I had to make a few minor mods to get coolant to flow into the system from the can.

Shortly after I started adding the second can of ES-12 I heard a soft "click" from the low pressure switch inside the cabinet. Sure enough, the compressor engaged when I fired up the engine.

I've got cold air coming out of the air conditioner! Yeah!! Not hot enough here at the moment to really see how cold it can be, but it's clearly doing the job now.
