Subject: Just got back from camping in my 1.9TD Syncro Westfalia!

It was a good weekend for camping - especially seeing how my 1.9L Turbo Diesel (AAZ) is purring away in the back of my Syncro Westfalia! Actually the Syncro DoKa and the Syncro Westie went out camping this weekend - the trip involved about 50km of 100km/h highway driving and 40km of 60km/h logging road driving (Ahbou Lake) and some minor 4x4ing to get to the place we wanted to go to at the lake. I drove the Syncro Westie loaded with two bikes, a kayak, blow up alligator, food, water, sleeping stuff, son and dog. The wife took the Syncro DoKa with two more bikes, some food and daughter. Both vehicles made it there with no problems and I have to say that I am really impressed with that 1.9L Turbo Diesel motor. Both vehicles have the standard 4.86:1 final drive with .85 4th gear. The lighter Syncro DoKa has a 2.0L CIS based gasoline motor with a mid range cam upgrade (266 degree) for about 130hp and about 130ft/lbs of torque - 6.5R16 tires (~29.4"). The Syncro Camper has a 1996 Jetta 1.9L TD motor without the catalytic converter and a K+N filter 75 to 80 hp and about 107 to 115 ft/lbs of torque - 205R16 tires (~29.2"). The camper kept up to the DoKa on the highway and on the gravel roads. Where the camper out performed the DoKa is on the slow off road stuff as there is just so much more bottom end torque - there is this one little hill that is more than a 100% incline and the camper idled over it in 1st - the DoKa had to work at it in G to make it over. The DoKa was a little better on the highway with one very long steep hill where it could stay in 3rd gear longer to get the speed up before going into 4th - other than that we could keep pace with each other. The one really noticeable thing was when we left both vehicles had full tanks (gasoline is 75.9 per liter and Diesel is 58.9 per liter) and when we returned the DoKa has 1/4 remaining and the Camper had 1/2 tank remaining. Oh yes, I am VERY happy with the 1.9TD motor!
