It is very important to mark the 2 parts FIRST so you can:

1. tell how far and which way you move it 2. put it back where it was if you make it worse

It takes very little adjustment to make a huge difference at this coupler joint. The splines are only there to add friction to the clamped area as only the inner part has splines. This means you cam move it less than a spline. Less than a spline is plenty in my experience.

It sounds like you did not tighten it enough after the adjustment and the adjustment changed when you tried to shift. Either that or you went the wrong way.

Clamp 2 pairs of vise grips onto it, one on each side of the joint. If you do this tightly and with both pointing the dame way you can use them to judge how much and which way you move it. Then experiment and see if you can improve things. Always fully tighten the clamp after an adjustment though it is tempting not to.
