Subject: 90 Westy... Blown 2.1...What's It Worth?
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

An acquaintance has a very nice 90 Westy with a cracked block. I haven't looked at the engine yet, so I'm not sure of the real damage. She is contemplating the various options available.

1) Replace the WBX...she is checking out the cost from Boston Bob. Costs: $3K with no core and about $700 to R/R the long block. 2) She has a Subaru daily driver... and is interested in, but wary of a Subaru conversion. Costs: Undeterminable until she could find a donor and an experienced converter anywhere near Southern Ohio... Lots of luck!!!

Now the question... 3) She is considering the value of the Westy as it sits... What's the Lists' opinions of it's value?

The Westy ... 125 K (lots of trips b/w Oregon and Ohio) Auto A/C Well maintained (BUT she did choose to ignore my casual comment that the engine sounded a little noisy the last time I saw it). New Skylight Pop top needs a good sealer Overall, I'd rate the van at 8.5 out of 10.

Owner background... She's 70+ y.o. and lately has had a hard time lifting/loading her bike and kayak and she was talking earlier this summer about selling the van (before the engine catastrophe). So, I am not sure of her proclivity at this point.

Thanks for your help and input. -- Stephen Steele* Chillicothe OH '91 Caravelle "Hans" '87 Westy "Franz" '84 Westfalia "Fritz" on loan to my nephew '81 Diesel Rabbit "Ol' Yeller" soon to be for sale '82 Caddy VW Diesel P.U. soon to be for sale '90 Jetta GL 17 yo Sons' "together" car '74 MGB My first car...yep, I've kept it since '74 '93 Chevy S-10
