Yep, it was open. On mine, that's the only way to know if it is full, it
spews LPG out the vent.
It was definitely 2.95 gallons the first fill. It has been a gallon or
two since, though one time it was very long-time between fills (many
camping trips) and it was about 2.4 gallons. Straight-up propane places,
no rip off. I don't think. Hmmmm.

Are you guys opening the vent fitting? Your tank should never take 2.95
gallons, unless they are ripping you off. My tank just ran out last week
and I had it filled. I watched the guy do it. He filled it until
liquid
came out the vent fitting. 2.3 gallons is all it will take to fill
correctly. Sounds like you were over-filled or just over-charged. It
is
only a 3 gallon tank. 75-80% full is about 2.3 gallons.

Did they start with a vacuum on the tank or with air/atmospheric
pressure in the tank?
After having our tank rebuilt (sandblasted/coated, etc.) the propane co.
pulled a vacuum on it for 15 minutes or so to remove air, and any
moisture in the system. It took 2.95 gallons to fill the first time.

Subject: propane filling problem
Hi everyone,
We just bought our second Westy (87), but are having a problem filling
the propane tank. After filling it to 1.5 gallons, we found propane
venting through a little hole in the bottom of the port for filling our
tank. My guess is that the auto-stop mechanism was not working
correctly. A similar venting has sometimes occurred on our 88. I
welcome your thoughts on the cause of the problem, as well as how to
prevent it in the future, and how to stop the venting once it begins.
Thanks in advance!
