Don't run a higher pressure than the max listed on the sidewall. However, if the max is lower than the recommended for the vehicle, then the tires may be the wrong ones. On a Vanagon, tires are supposed to be either 6 ply or better, or reinforced sidewall. Either of these should allow the higher pressures and so state on the sidewall. Are you running regular passenger car tires? Basically you want to be sure to buy tires whose max pressure as listed on the sidewall is high enough to allow you to follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer.
