Replaced the injection pump and finally got the tools together to time the orphan klankenstinkenwagen. That's one job that you gotta have the right tools for. Fortunately, I have a friend in LA who used to be a dealer wrench and he sent the adapter. Indicator came off Ebay for $10. Pump index pin came off the lathe and the cam holder was fabbed from a piece of steel that was laying around.

I've played with a bunch of VWs in my life, but never an oil burner. It's been a learning experience. Apparently, there are errors in the current edition ('91) Bentley regarding the Diesels and, once again fortunately, I came into an early edition ('85) that has the correct information.

I just drove it around the block for the first time. Seems to run well though there is a problem with the vacuum pump (NO BRAKES!!!) and I still haven't figured out where the short in the alternator wiring is (red light on! Even unplugged. Grounded blue wire somewhere...) New alternator.

Boy... it sure is noisy in here...

Get those two little problems sorted out and it's on to repairing the mouse ravaged interior. New water pump, new water hose (already done), fill the propane to see if the reefer will run on gas, fix the indicator panel, etc. etc. etc...

Who can talk to me about Diesel vacuum pumps? I'm curious about the position (rotationally). Does it affect anything other than fit? In other words, why no power to the brakes?

Onward and upward!

First pics are at: <http://wetwesties.type2.com/DieselWesty/> This is where we are starting...

A big thanks to Mark Drillock for the pump and the patience!

Jim
