Hi Scott --

I just pulled the gear on a pump for the first time a couple of weeks ago, it was a little scary. I don't know what kinds of tools you have to work with, but I would recommend a 'real' puller if possible. The gear on my pump was really really on there, and with the two-armed puller that I have, it was pretty scary. I was trying tightening, then a bit of tapping on the gear with a rubber mallet, then tightening... it finally came out about when I had pretty much lost hope.

The puller that I used is the sort with a large center screw with a pointy tip, and a couple of holes through which bolts may be fitted. I found some bolts in my dead-vw collection, then had a lot of trouble getting the washer and bolt in behind the small holes in the gear. Eventually made two 'units' with washer and bolt glued together, which I could get behind the gear on the tip of my finger. Urgggh, what a pain! Bent the hell out of the washers on both ends of the bolts that went into the gear, so you _know_ it takes some force.

Let us know what kind of tools you have to work with, that's the main thing. Oh, and of course you've already removed the injector lines... wouldn't want to torque them by accident.

Gary
