Subject: Replacing shoft lever bushing/seal with transmission installed?
Comments: To: AA Transaxle <aatransaxle@JUNO.COM>

Darrel, and other Listees,

Is it possible to replace BOTH the seal and the bushing on the shift lever shaft of a manual transmission with the transmission installed? Bentley, on page 35.18, indicates that the seal can be replaced in place, but the manual is less clear on the same procedure for the bushing.

Photo figure 3 on page 35.19 shows a bushing which appears to be externally accessible, and removable with water pump pliers, but on my two transmissions, one installed and the other "reserved," the externally-accesible bushing is not evident.

And, without regard to serial numbers or case stampings, how does one distinguish between an four-speed 091 and a four-speed 091/1 transmission? What are the external indications of the differences?

Thanks.

Regards,

Tom Hanlon Palm Springs, CA 84 Westfalia
