I was just going to suggest this as I added a rotating fan that looks just
like this one to my '85 Westy the week before last when I didn't have the
A/C fixed. I installed the base in the lid of the ashtray so that I
wouldn't have to put screw holes in the dash (I am wierd about keeping the
van original as possible OK?). It worked well enough and it was only about
$15 at the local Advance Auto. When I got the A/C working I noticed a big
benefit with the fan on the dash. Normally you have the A/C cold air
hitting you just on the back of the neck in these older Westies. It keeps
you cool, but you really would like a little air on the front of you. Well
this fan catches the cold air and helps blow it on the front of you! It is
almost as good as having the air come out of the front vents without all of
the extra money/time that it would take to put in a front mounted
evaporator. I would try this before going the more expensive route and see
how you like it. I have a second one that I bought at Walmart that has a
big clip on it that looks like the kind of clips you put on potato chip bags
except more beefy. This is the same fan, etc, but you can put it in the
rear of the van and clip it around the hole for the bed in the roof. This
would be great for camping, etc.

One was by the rear-most pivoting window, one above the dash. Worked
like a charm. We had a really huge house battery and would use these
when snoozing in the van as well. We'd even leave the one in the back on
exhausting hot air when parked at stores, etc.
They were sturdy enough to do the job, but cheap enough to toss when
they got clunky (about 2 years). Check K*Mart, their "On the Road"
series was identical to what I see on this site, and they were only
about $15.

I haven't yet had a chance to re-attach the drip hose to the evaporator
pan. This is going to take some time and squeezing myself into tight
places and since it's been over 90 the past several days -- I'm waiting.
However, in addition to fixing the drip (thanks to all on the list who
gave me suggestions) I want your opinions on a portable 12 volt
dashboard fan. I've checked out this web site and it would be useful
even when the A/C is running. (and not really cooling the front, at

Anybody have any experience with these? There's not much in the
archives.
