From most of the replies (including the original poster) it seems to be assumed that the middle seat in question is for a WESTY. A middle seat in my 7 passenger van sure as heck has room to move sideways (which is why I mentioned the bolts. 8/9 passenger vans have an even longer middle bench, which becomes much harder for a single person to manuever in an out of the Van.

After all, this is the Vanagon mailing list, not necessarily the Westfalia list.:)
