Subject: OT: Will Americans buy an Australian "Pontiac GTO"??
Content-type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=us-ascii

The Australian GM Holden VY Monaro coupe will be sold in USA from next year. It will have Pontiac GTO badges stuck on. Any takers?

Holden having axed its home-grown iron 5.0-5.6 V8, it will have the currently-fitted Gen III 5.7 Chev V8, with a 4-speed auto or the AWFUL 6-speed manual. Exhaust & intake work will bump it to 350hp.

Unfortunately there will be a US-only grill tacked on... actually it's fortunate that there's a different grill for the US. Wouldn't want it on NZ & Aussie-spec cars!!

The car is a coupe version of the Commodore sedan (being sold in the middle East as "Chevrolet Lumina"), and should share that car's rear-end-induced oversteer, caused by the trailing-arm IRS (though this is a trait held by all Commodores including the first live-axled versions of 1978).

Commodores use a modified Opel body.

The first "American" muscle car to have what can be called handling. Shame they're not going to keep the original badgework.

Looks like the commodore family will also be sold in England... with Vauxhall badges.
