The owners manual won't be any help for the A/C since this was not a factory installed option in '85 (there is no mention in either the Vanagon owners manual or the Westfalia supplement for my "85 Wolfsburg). The A/C switch is pretty self explanatory. For clues on the cryptic heater/vent sliders check Vanagon.com for simple, understandable instructions for these. The owners manual leaves a lot to be desired in this area. Since there's no connection between the A/C and any vents up front you want to be sure everything up front is closed when trying to get cool.
