Sounds like the CV came apart, or more likely, the bolts came out that hold the CV's in place. Had that happen to me once in my old 68' aircooled. Lost my pulling power. Like it went into neutral or something.

Get under there and see if all the bolts are in place.

Just changed the CV's on my 88GL and found several bolts or cap screws backed completely out. An interesting task if you have not done it before, and not to complicated. CV changes on Buses and Vanagons are the easiest in the auto world I think.
