I heard recently that this "30 year exemption" was going to be changed.

Yes, but it will be 30 year old vehicles. It was 25 years, then they
changed it to 30. We are in the 5 year waiting period before the
affected year starts incrementing again. Right now 73 and older are
exempt as you noted.
