Subject: Seals for Westy Pop Top - Where can I get these for cheap??
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi all,

Having just gotten myself into a mess of a project, I now need to find seals (gaskets) for this used Westy Pop-Top that I just bought.

The factory seal costs like 197 bucks from the dealer, and seems to have aluminum clips embedded in it. And that is just for the main roof piece, not the luggage carrier.

I have seen various seals, or gasket type materials around (like at GoWesty) which sell from 1 dollar a foot and up.

My question is... has anyone had good success using a "generic" seal (gasket) for their Westy Pop-Top? If so, would you be so kind as to tell me the specifics regarding where to get it and what the product number and description is.

Also, what's the deal with the luggage carrier?? It is going to fill up with water, and then the water is going to drain through the holes in the bottom, and get trapped between the roof and the carrier.... there must be some sort of tube drainage system on a factory set-up... where does this drain to... do I need to drill a hole in the roof to allow for a tube to pass down through??

Thanks in advance for any help and/or insights you can provide. I am hoping to spot a Westy around here soon, and ask the owner if I can just get in it and look closely at how the roof system is put together and take a ton of digital photos... but that has not happened yet.

PS. After I figure this one out, I will begin to research how to get a latch installed on this mess... as the guy who sold it to me seemed to forget the latch (not really an impotant part of a Pop-Top.. right... the latch... damn)

PPS. After I get the latch problem solved, I will try to put all the pieces of the little sunroof assembly together, and get it sealed and functional.

PPPS... then I paint the top light gray with my two part marine epoxy paint. (brush or foam roller... hmmm)

PPPPS... and finally, I convince my wife that she should sew a nice new tent thingie for me, as the one it came with is not only loaded with cat urine... but is so brittle I am not even certain that I can use it as a pattern. I'll see if I can order the tent fabric in a nice marigold, or sunflower yellow.... that should look cool! (more and more money going into this every day).

Well... so much for that cheap, simple project to get my 6 year old son sleeping up on the roof.

IMPORTANT!!! In order to reply to me, you must have the word "FISH" somewhere in the subject line of the email. Otherwise it goes directly in the trash.
