I put a knife-type battery switch in the battery compartment. Most thieves don't know squat about VWs, so they probably won't think to look there. Another idea I have toyed with but haven't done yet is a simple hidden toggle switch that disconnects the fuel pump. A "poor man's" way to do this is to pull the fuel pump relay and sticking it in your pocket, but that's not particularly convenient.
