I once fit over 62 litres into my '76 westy in the mountains in southern Mexico. This was a bona fide Mexican fill, in which the pump runs full blast until gas blow back out the filler hole. We *were* running on vapour, so I suspect we had maybe a litre left (probably less), plus the filler pipe plus the gas left on the ground. And the calibration at the Pemex station may have been off.

I ran my '82 diesel dry on I-5 on the drive home after buying it in LA -- the fuel gauge was broken, okay? -- and it took a gallon jerry can at the side of the road plus a titch over 15 gallons at the pump a couple of miles down the road. I have a bad habit of filling filler pipes, so that may account for the extra bit.
