The proper pliers have a ratchet-lock to hold the clamps open, and the ends
of the jaws rotate so you can hold the clamp at a convenient angle.  I
think your arc-joint-plier experiment is only going to ruin a presumably
nice pair of Channel-Lok pliers without giving you a good result...
