I saw 12 psi once hot, with surges slightly higher when revving up the engine. Normal driving maintained 10 to 12 psi. I was surprised it was this high. This is an '85 with a brand new Boston Bob engine, all new hoses, new water pump, thermostat, pressure cap, tank, etc. I would have guessed it would run much lower. Temp gauge was right on the red light area, or slightly below. The 12 psi is near the set point of the cap, although this was measured at the radiator. Pressure at the tank feeding the water pump may be lower due to inlet suction of the pump? It took at least 4 or 5 hours before I was able to remove the fitting due to residual heat and pressure. It did not drop immediately, which I took as a sign of a pretty tight system. I should have recorded the data a little better. It was just a whim to try it, not really being used to diagnose any trouble. Jay

Jay: Please elaborate on the readings you normally saw with your pressure gauge connected to the vanagon radiator bleed screw. How soon after shutting off the engine before the gauge (system) lost pressure, and what reading did you normally see when driving (7PSI, 10?). Thanks.
