I've been using this tool for over 20 years, never had a problem stripping it. Stripping the 12 points on the bolt a few times, but not the tool. Price is around $4 to $6 depending on the FLAPS.

Lisle's been around for a LONG time and have produced some excellent quality tools that I still use on my VWs. Perhaps they have moved production to a poorer quality manufacturing source for their tools, not unheard of in this day of "globalization".
