Well, Bill that is relative to where you are located. If you are inside the engine compartment, then the backside of the taillights would be facing you. Then the outside of the taillight where the lens actually is would be the area behind the taillight that you seem to be referring to. However, when facing the vehicle from outside, most normal folks think of the space "behind the taillight" as being inside the engine compartment.

Try this: Open the engine lid in your bus/westy/etc. Look inside and turn your attention to right side of the compartment. That is the space he wants to put his battery in. Then you're facing the backside of the taillight. Smakes smense to sme.
