Hey Tim
Looks like you already gotten quite a bit of advice, but thought I would
give you my experience... 91 GL had the same symptoms as yours and indeed
the same scenario. I ordered a cable from VW and it came with new
sheathing, rubber boot... The toughest part was getting the ball (with a
hole in it) end of the cable off of the solid ball that is on the lever of
the transmission (mine is an automatic). That thing was rustedon there so
badly that I had to eventually take that lever off (which was a job in
itself) and then cut the outer part of the ball (attached to the cable) with
a grinder (maybe I used my Dremel). Once that was accomplished it took me
awhile to get the lever back onto the transmission. the rest was easy.
Took two cold nights and lots of cursing under the van on a gravel driveway.
Keep it lubed up like the others have said. I'm going to check on mine
right now!! Good Luck.
Dan
