Like all other Vanagon systems, it depends on the previous duty and whether the transmission was serviced correctly. The ATF should be clear to pink with NO PARTICLES of anything resembling metal or friction materials. Examining the residue in the oil pan during servicing is the best way to detect solid matter contamination. I have two automatic Vanagons that shift perfectly due to strict ATF & strainer changes every 30,000 miles. Also I add a small amount of Trans X to the ATF. Regards, John
