The light operates either on or off. Dim or flickering usually indicates a bad switch or a wire shorting to ground some where. Make sure that 1/2 quart of oil you added did not overfill it. Oil level should be t between the marks. Top mark is extreme maximum.

Hello, on the way to work this mornig my oil light became very dimly visible - not sure if it was very dim or just my imagination - I dismissed it as my headlights were on and thought maybe that had something to do with it. Sure enough, it started to go to about 1/3 - 1/2 output of that of a normaly "on" LED. I pulled off the highway and checked oil - oil all up stick and clean as I just had it changed a few weeks ago - hard to get a good reading, fairly dark out. Added 1/2 quart of Mobil 1 and continued on - light did not come on at all again. The engine, all original, has 202500 miles (1.9L in 85 Westy). Question, is this normal behavior for an oil light to glow dimly indicating slightly low pressure, or is it an on/off thing and maybe sensor problem? I know it's only a matter of time (months, days, whatever) before I need a new rebuild). Any help would be . . . helpful.
