Absolutely true about the top speed. The thing to do is look into hybrids- My buddy's 16V Rabbit conversion would routinely hand my Corrado it's own arse. Then the Corrado would hand it back, but only after it got to 80MPH or so (that's 17.3 Liters per hectare). And yes, I count this talk of hybrids as Vanagon Content- it's a good example of how sometimes, you need to finish the vehicle design that the factory started.
