Subject: Buying my first VW
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my soon-to-be-new-to-me '82 Vanagon's starter. That problem has been solved and the starter is sitting with my toolbox waiting to go. Now I've got some detail questions hopefully someone can help with. The bus has been sitting for about 8 months now (since the starter went out) and I'm planning on camping out in it the first night I get it started, I also have to drive from Madison WI to Louisville KY to get it home. Here are my questions and thanks for the help.

1. Is there anything in particular I should look at on a bus that has sat for so long before I make the drive?

2. I've never had the "privilege" of working on a diesel engine. Should I siphon out the old fuel before trying to start the engine?

3. What do I need to do to purge the water system? I believe it was emptied when the starter died but it's been sitting for 8 months now.
