This info is not just for diesels, all Vanagon manual trannys have the same arrangement. These shafts often get chewed up by bad clutch pilot bearings and have to be replaced.

Yes, they can be removed without resorting to what you did. You have to rotate the diff until a recess lines up with the splined sleeve. The sleeve will then move just far enough to slide entirely onto the input shaft. Then unscrew both CCW.

It is a fairly close fit. I would guess that VW did this so a failure of the circlip would not result in the sleeve moving far enough to disengage while you were driving.
