Curious. Both of my Syncros have a spare tire carrier in the same place as the 2WD models (mine are an 86 and a 91 model). Sounds like a previous owner (if it had one) removed the normal carrier. I can take some digital photos of how the carrier hooks in on my 86 if you need them.
