My Yakima artificial gutters weren't all that expensive, although I haven't priced them lately. And they worked great on the poptop of my '73 westy. Except for the fact that you can't lift the top with anything on there. Also you should realize that the greatest stress isn't the weight of what you carry up there, but the wind pulling it up -- at least with things like boats and boxes.
