Subject: Re: Cheap Westy in OKC- UPDATE
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Okay, so I went to check the bus ('81 Westfalia non-propane, aircooled) out in person tonight, and yes, it now belongs to me. I just couln't pass up a $600 Westy (even if third and fourth gears are non-op). Cosmetically, it's quite nice. Only a few minor dings and scuffs, and it looks like it should be very presentable with a good bath and a coat of polish. Being an Oklahoma bus, there is ZERO rust. All the interior bits and accessories are where they should be, and seem to be in good shape. The top canvas is in perfect condition as well, and all of the electrical seems to be in working order.

Engine-wise, the bus hasn't been used in over a year, so there are some issues. It actually fired right up and idled reasonably well (it's in need of a new muffler), but it immediately began to cut out and lose power under load. Even at part throttle, the motor flat spots and runs erratically. Let off, and it returns to normal idle. I didn't notice any smoke beyond a small puff at startup, and there were no discernably uncomfortable noises (lifters etc). I took it for a lurching spin around the yard, but it did not want to make enough power to accelerate beyong first gear. Could this be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter from sitting? My '81 transporter has a Weber conversion, so I'm not familiar with the FI system on the type IV. I do have the Bentley manual, so that should help. Any advice as to where I should start searching out the gremlins? I can't wait to start rehab-ing my new purchase, so any advice would be much appreciated. TIA-
