Actually quite a bit of difference. If you "set nomail" you can still read the list on the vanagon site, and still send mail to it. If you unsub, you cannot send mail to it, plus it takes awhile to get back on. So, let's say that you're off on a trip, and you've had some problems with the vanagon. You go to the nearest local library or internet cafe, get on line and send off a message to vanagons. You can even request that people reply to you directly -- however, if you unsub, you would have to first send a resub, wait a day or two for an answer -- maybe even longer if the list managers are off on holiday too.
