When I purchase a vehicle I always try to get some money, any money, into the hands of the seller as fast as possible in order to make it a binding transaction. Verbal agreements are supposed to be binding under contract law here in Canada, but they still seem to be loosy goosey.

Anyway...to tighten up a long distance purchase agreement as fast as possible you could send a PayPal payment to the seller and a then do a followup phone call to urge them to accept it. This would take mere minutes to do and you would have a paper (email) trail which would prove there was an "offer" and an "acceptance" and therefore a binding contract. It would then be be uncomfortable for the seller to try to break this contract.
