I wouldn't want my battery back there. My 48 month batteries last six years because they are in a very friendly environment inside the vehicle. I've seen how nasty Waser Boxer engine bays get and even on my Air Cooled I've had enough rain coming through the air intakes to crash an alternator. That might not hurt a battery but it sure is a more harsh environment than the van interior.
