If the bores are just slightly rusted through lying outside, and they're not
worn badly as such, then with careful cleaning (piston at BDC, a ring of
grease down the bottom) these can usually be turned around to produce an
engine with excellent compressions and low oil burn. Some reborers used to
leave them out to weather them deliberately, creating a very fine pitted
surface that holds oil well and they tend to run-in nicely - a bit like the
idea behind cross-hatch reaming.
