I guess if you live in the complete boonies, this might be a worthwhile investment.

In my town, the local garage has a shop press, and is happy to push things for a couple bucks. I bet you could enjoy a couple good fishing stories with Bennie or Jean down at the local service station while they pop out your wheel-bearing seal and smack in a new one.

Amortize the likely number of uses over the life of your cars (or you) and it is pretty likely that a shop press won't end up in your shop.

I, on the other hand, think I need a laser-guided lathe.

Dear Volks,

As my Westy and 914 both age and I find myself performing more and more mechanical work requiring the aid of a shop press, I would like to ask the more mechanically able of you folks to advise me on buying a decent, affordable shop press. Harbor Freight offers a small 6-ton bench top a-frame model for $49.00 on up to a 10, 12 and 20 ton floor presses approaching $229.00 or so. These reletively inexpensive import models are along the lines of what I had in mind. Would the 6 ton model be inadequate for wheel bearings, suspension bushing etc.?

Thanks,

Tom Naylor
