Don't bet on it. I got stuck on a sloping loose gravel shoulder with a Mitsubishi Delica 4WD van, which has a good LSD. I had to engage the front wheels to get it onto the road.

Admittedly the delica's diff isn't fully locking, but slip is little enough that you can feel the rear wheels fight one another in U-turns.
