Yes, VW did when the built the Camper/Multivan model with the removeable 12V/110V Dometic fridge. The relay and wiring setup is similar to what is shown in the Bentley manual for the GL Camper.

There are a variety of opinions and setups for adding a second battery to your Westy. Most have been discussed in this forum monthly. A search of the web and the archives should get you started.
